Connections in Discrete Mathematics: A Celebration of the Work of Ron Graham is a collection of 20 mathematics research articles in an array of fields that have been influenced by Ron Graham. Graham is Irwin and Joan Jacobs Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego, after being Chief Scientist at the California Institute for Telecommunication and Information Technology, before which he was Chief Scientist at AT&T Bell Labs. He is a former President of both the Mathematics Association of America and the American Mathematical Society, but his wide ranging interests and skills gave rise to other activities and positions, such as President of the International Jugglers Association and a performer with Cirque du Soleil. He is also in both the Guinness Book of World Records and Ripley's Believe It or Not! But these exploits pale in comparison to his influence in developing the subject of Discrete Mathematics over the past half century, as the mathematical foundation for the modern digital world. This book combines beautiful mathematics with personal reflections from some of his many collaborators, leading experts in number theory, probability, graph theory, discrete geometry, algebraic combinatorics, and other diverse topics.
Glenn Hurlbert, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Mathematics, was one of three editors of “Connections in Discrete Mathematics: A Celebration of the Work of Ron Graham,” published in May of 2018 by Cambridge University Press.
