About the Competition

The competition is individual and consists of a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.  More information about the competition can be found on the Mathematical Association of America's website.

Register

Many middle schools host the competition for their students, and it is often done at the school during the school day.  If your child is interested in participating but is enrolled at a middle school that will not offer the AMC 8 in January 2024, please complete the interest form linked below. We will get back to you with more detailed information and a link to register if we have space to accommodate them.  We are limited in the number of students we can accommodate, so we please ask that you check with your school to see if it will be offered there before signing up to take it at VCU.
