Minors

Minor in Mathematical Sciences

Students who are interested in the subject of mathematics and applied mathematics but cannot accommodate a full major should consider minoring in the subject. A mathematics and applied mathematics minor gives you the flexibility to focus on upper-level courses in the mathematics field, provides you with a rich educational experience and helps supplement your major.

Minor in Statistics

A minor in statistics consists of at least 18 credits in courses labeled CMSC, MATH, OPER, or STAT, including a minimum of one semester of calculus and nine upper-level (300-500 level) credits in statistics courses.

Neither STAT 208 or STAT 210, nor any 100-level mathematics can be used to fulfill the required 18 credits. It is strongly recommended, but not required, that students seeking a minor in statistics take STAT 212 Concepts of Statistics. A minimum grade-point average of 2.0 must be achieved in the minor.

Requirements

Visit the VCU Bulletin to see full and most up-to-date requirements for a minor in mathematics. Specific requirements are determined by the effective catalog year for your minor, which is normally the same as your major. Use the VCU Archive Bulletins to find your specific requirements.

Students who are majoring in mathematical sciences may not declare a minor in mathematics.

Before Applying to Graduate

Before you apply to graduate, make sure that your minor in mathematics is showing in Degree Works. If you do not see the minor, please submit a Change of Minor Form. You no longer need to specifically apply to graduate with a minor.
