The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics would like to kindly invite you to our Open House event on Friday, January 27, 3:00–5:00 pm at the Math Exchange to discuss the Bridges Conference with the larger VCU community. VCU will host the Bridges Conference in the summer of 2024.

This international conference takes place every year in late July/early August, and brings together an interdisciplinary group of mathematicians, scientists, artists, and educators in an atmosphere of mutual exchange and inspiration. It typically includes invited plenary talks, contributed research papers, hands-on workshops, a visual art exhibition, as well as a “family day” open to the public, and arts-focused performance events in music, film, poetry, and theater. The Bridges Organization believes that there are great ideas waiting to be found in mathematical analysis and synthesis of art, and that artistic thinking and activities can enliven the mathematics classroom.

Topics discussed and presented during the conference include mathematical connections to art, music, architecture, and culture, as well as visualizations such as 3D printing, spherical video, virtual, and augmented reality.

With this informal gathering and information session we hope that we can generate some interest within the VCU community, and have a robust cross-unit participation that includes students. We will have a short presentation, display proceedings of past conferences, and some mathematical art pieces, and we would be very happy if you could join us.
