Score Interpretation
Math placement test scores should be interpreted with the assistance of an academic advisor. Students should consult with their advisor to determine which course they should register for to avoid taking unnecessary courses. See the Courses page for course descriptions.
Scores
Using the dropdown tabs below, select the range that contains your ALEKS math placement test score to see which courses you are eligible to take.
An ALEKS placement test score between 0 and 39 places you at the 131 level.
You are eligible to register for MATH 131 and MATH 129.
Please note that MATH 131 does not satisfy the prerequisites for any higher-level mathematics courses. If you are required to take MATH 139 or higher we highly recommend that you take MATH 129 or complete the prep and learning modules in ALEKS.
An ALEKS placement test score between 40 and 56 places you at the 141 level.
You are eligible to register for MATH 141 and STAT 208.
An ALEKS placement test score of 57 places you at the 139 level.
You are eligible to register for MATH 139, MATH 141, and STAT 208.
An ALEKS placement test score between 58 and 75 places you at the 151 level.
You are eligible to register for MATH 151, STAT 210, BUSN 212, and MATH 310.
A math placement score at the 151 level will satisfy the math prerequisites for BIOL 151, BIOZ 151, and CHEM 101.
An ALEKS placement test score between 76 and 100 places you at the 200 level.
You are eligible to register for MATH 200, MATH 211, BUSN 212, and STAT 212.
A math placement score at the 151 level will satisfy the math prerequisites for CMSC 256.
Note: Due to changes in the ALEKS Math Placement test, we have revised the ALEKS Math Placement cutoff scores for students taking the ALEKS Math Placement test beginning March 11, 2024. If you took the ALEKS Math Placement Test prior to March 11, 2024, your scores will not be retroactively adjusted to the new cutoff scores.
Please Note
- The mathematics placement test is a prerequisite for only the introductory courses above.
- The mathematics placement test score indicates a student’s appropriate level of introductory course and does not earn a student credit for any course. It does not satisfy any requirement for graduation.
- Math courses taken in high school that are not dual enrollment courses with an accredited university cannot be used to place into a higher introductory math course.
- MATH 131 fulfills the Quantitative Foundations requirement. If you need to complete the College Algebra Sequence or higher and place at the 131 level, the math department highly recommends you take MATH 129.
Satisfied With Your Score?
Write down your placement score. Your score will be uploaded to your student record within 24-48 hours so you can register for the math class for which you qualified.
Unsatisfied With Your Score?
If you have taken the placement test and are not satisfied with your current math course placement, you have an option to place one course level higher by completing the appropriate ALEKS prep and learning module.
Visit the Prep and Learning Modules page for further information on this option.
